Maki Sugimoto
Dr. Maki Sugimoto is a Japanese hepatobiliary pancreatic surgeon and medical innovator with over 30 years of clinical experience. He currently serves as a professor at Teikyo University and as the Founder and CEO of Holoeyes Inc., a pioneering medical technology company specializing in extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI), and 3D imaging solutions for surgical navigation, medical education, and spatial computing in healthcare. After graduating from Teikyo University School of Medicine in 1996, Dr. Sugimoto obtained his M.D./Ph.D. from Teikyo University Graduate School of Medical Sciences in 2004. He further pursued advanced studies in the United States at the Department of Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System in Silicon Valley as a Visiting Fellow. His clinical foundation was built through key roles at the National Hospital Organization and Tokyo Medical Center. Dr. Sugimoto’s research and entrepreneurial work span across medical imaging, surgical support systems, 3D organ modeling using biologically textured printing, and the development of XR-based diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Since founding Holoeyes Inc. in 2016, he has led numerous initiatives that integrate XR technologies—including VR, AR, and MR—into surgical practice, Metaverse-based medical education, and AI-assisted medical image analysis. He is also actively engaged in academia-industry collaborations, IP strategy, and science education. He is board-certified by the Japan Surgical Society and the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society, and he is also certified under the Endoscopic Surgical Skill Qualification System of the Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery, where he contributes to the promotion of medical-engineering cooperation.
