Dr Pradeep Chowbey is the Chairman- Max Institute of Laparoscopic, Robotic and Bariatric Surgery and Chairman- Surgery & Allied Surgical Specialities at Max Healthcare, Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi.
Dr Pradeep Chowbey belongs to the cadre of pioneer laparoscopic surgeons in the Asian subcontinent who took the leap from open to laparoscopic surgery. He was one of the first to perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy in North India and since then, has worked with singular determination to develop, evaluate and propagate minimal access, metabolic and bariatric surgery in India.
He is the Honorary Surgeon to the President of India, Honorary Surgeon to the Armed Force Medical Services and Surgeon to His Holiness The Dalai Lama.
He has been awarded the Padmashree in 2002 for his dedication and service in the field of Minimal access surgery. Dr Chowbey and his team have been featured in the Limca Book of records for 20 consecutive years for maximum number of laparoscopic surgeries and have more than 95000 surgeries to their credit.
In 2021, Dr Chowbey took another giant leap from Laparoscopic to Robotic surgery and has won two world records featured in the World Book of Records for the fastest 100 robotic surgeries and for 600+ robotic surgeries in one year by a single surgeon on a single unit.
Dr Chowbey has served various esteemed worldwide associations as the President including: Founder President, Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS, 2004), President Asia Pacific Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Society (APMBSS, 2010-2012), President Asia Pacific Chapter of International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO 2011-13), Worldwide President of International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO 2012-2013), President Obesity & Metabolic Surgery Society of India (OSSI 2006-2009) and Trustee & Past President Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons (IAGES).
Under Dr Chowbey’s leadership, the Institute has been accredited as the Centre of Excellence for EndoHernia Surgery by the Asia Pacific Hernia Society and Centre of Excellence for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery by the Surgical review Corporation, USA (2011-2013).
Dr Chowbey along with the core group of experts has formulated guidelines and recommendations for Hernia Surgery (worldwide), Minimal Access Surgery (India) and Obesity & Metabolic Surgery (India).
