Shirley Liu
Dr. Shirley Liu is a distinguished surgeon and clinical leader, currently serving as the Head of the Department of Surgery at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital (AHNH) in Hong Kong. She also holds the positions of Head of the Endocrine Surgery Division and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at her alma mater, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Dr. Liu began her medical education at CUHK, where she graduated in 2003 with Distinction in Surgery and received multiple academic prizes and scholarships. She completed her general surgery residency at Prince of Wales Hospital and attained fellowships from both the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong in 2010. She subsequently sub-specialized in Endocrine and Bariatric Surgery, enhancing her expertise through dedicated observerships and mini-fellowships in the United States, South Korea, Mainland China and Taiwan. Her international standing was further cemented when she was named an International Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2018. As an active researcher, Dr. Liu has authored over 70 original articles in peer-reviewed journals. Her work has been recognized with more than 20 international awards, including the prestigious Fujimoto Prize (First Prize) from the Asian Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) Best Clinical Paper Prize, the IAES Dr. John Farndon Award, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh China Medal, which she has received twice. Demonstrating a profound commitment to advancing her field locally, Dr. Liu spearheaded the establishment of the Hong Kong Association of Endocrine Surgeons (HKAES) in April 2019 and serves as its Founding Vice President. Her leadership extends to numerous key roles in Hong Kong, including Councilor of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, President of the Hong Kong Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Honorary Treasurer of the Hong Kong Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, and Councilor of the Hong Kong Society of Minimal Access Surgery.
