Dr Edward Cheong is a senior consultant upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgeon with over 29 years’ experience in laparoscopic GI surgery and endoscopic treatments for early upper GI (esophagus and stomach) cancer. After his 6 years higher specialist surgical training at The Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in the UK in 2008, he completed a prestigious 1 year post-CCT senior surgical fellowship (2008 - 2009) in minimally invasive oesophagectomy (MIO), minimally invasive oesophageal-gastric and bariatric surgery, and endoscopic treatments for early oesophageal and gastric cancers with the world-renowned MIO pioneer, Professors James D. Luketich and Blair Jobe at the Heart, Lung, and Esophageal Surgery Institute, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, USA.
Prior to joining PanAsia Surgery, Dr Cheong was the upper GI cancer director and senior consultant Upper GI and laparoscopic surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) in the UK from 2009-2022. He introduced MIO, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) and endoscopic treatments for early cancers. For 12 consecutive years, NNUH was the top OG cancer center in UK with the shortest length of stay (6 days) after upper GI cancer surgery and MIO (Published in the National Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer Audit NOGCA in UK). This is an excellent marker of low post-operative complication and mortality (an important factor which has a positive impact on the long-term survival of patients after cancer surgery). He also has the biggest experience in total MIO in Singapore and the use of Endovac without a sponge (with the Exudrain) for anastomotic leaks.
Since 2015, Dr Cheong has been the Co-director and Trainer at the Minimally Invasive Gastrectomy and Esophagectomy Course (sponsored by the European Society of Surgical Oncology, and Intuitive DaVinci Robotic Surgery) at the University Medical Centre, Utrecht, Netherlands with Professor R. van Hillegersberg and the MIO course in University Medical Center Mainz, Germany with Professor P. Grimminger.
In 2017 Dr Cheong was the recipient of the Inaugural Dr James D. Luketich Chairman International Award in USA. This was the first and only time the award was presented to a surgeon outside USA. It was presented to the most outstanding international graduate whose academic and clinical achievements have exemplified the innovative spirit of progress and commitment to cardiothoracic surgical excellence.
In 2018, Dr Cheong was also the recipient of the National Award in UK by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) celebrating NHS 70th Birthday in UK “Driving Improvements – Top Doctors who have made a difference to the NHS.”
Dr Cheong is also widely published in high impact journals, and is frequently invited as chair, speaker or tutor at international and national upper GI meetings.
