Associate Professor Alfred Kow is a practicing HPB and Liver Transplant surgeon and currently the Head of the Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery at the National University Hospital Singapore. His main area of interest is liver transplantation and minimally invasive HPB surgery. He has pioneered complex HPB surgeries in Singapore using MIS technique including major laparoscopic hepatectomies, laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipples), full laparoscopic ALPPS procedure and laparoscopic liver donor hepatectomy for liver transplantation. He was the Clinical Director (2017 to 2023) of the MILES program at NUHS (Management and Innovation for Longevity in Elderly Surgical patients), aimed to improve the peri-operative care and outcomes of elderly patients needing surgery in NUHS. He is also Vice Chairman of Medical Board (Education) for the National University Hospital, Singapore. He is a pioneer in developing mixed reality technology with holographic-guided HPB surgery, including holographic-guided laparoscopic liver resection, holographic-guided donor hepatectomy and holographic-guided laparoscopic Whipples operation.
He is active in the International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS) as a member of its Education and Scholarship Committee since 2021, and an elected Council member of the ILTS 2023 to 2027. He co-leads its Regional Expansion Advanced Learning project for Southeast Asia and South Asia towards growing the outreach of LT through education. In 2023, he received the ILTS REAL award, a testament of his achievement in growing the knowledge and skills of LT in the Southeast Asian and South Asian regions through education. He leads the study group for MIS HPB Surgery and steering committee for study groups at the International Society for Liver Surgeons (ISLS) and is the Members-at-Large at the ISLS Council. He is the current Education Committee Chair of the iLDLT Group.
Associate Professor Alfred Kow’s contributions to healthcare extends beyond his clinical work. He leads the planning of the medical school curriculum for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, as the Assistant Dean of Education. He received numerous teaching excellence awards from the hospital, medical school and university (including Outstanding Educator Award at the NUS University Awards in 2021). He is actively involved in surgical training for postgraduate surgical program at the hospital and the Ministry of Health of Singapore. His creativity in incorporating advanced technology in education has resulted in engaging teaching approaches using VR, MR and AI machine learning models in medical training.
Associate Professor Alfred Kow has given much to research activities involving development of surgical techniques in HPB surgery, liver transplantation and outcomes of surgical treatment for HPB malignancies. He is active in research directed at improving undergraduate and postgraduate surgical education and training. Much of his research on education aim to understand the art and science behind training the junior doctors to be excellent surgeons for the future. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and conference articles, and a few book chapters in hepatobiliary surgery and gastroenterology.
