Prof. Dr. Oktar Asoğlu Professor of Surgery Specialist in Colorectal Surgery • Surgical Oncology • Minimally Invasive Surgery Prof. Dr. Oktar Asoğlu graduated from Istanbul Faculty of Medicine and became a specialist in General Surgery in 1996. That same year, he obtained certifications in gastrointestinal endoscopy and surgical laparoscopy from the Department of General Surgery at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. During his military service at Van Military Hospital—at the height of regional conflict—he performed surgery on 500 gunshot wounds without a single loss, earning a military award. This unique experience in war surgery significantly shaped his surgical skills and judgment. In 2000, he joined the Department of General Surgery at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine as a specialist. He further advanced his training abroad: in 2003 at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota, USA) in digestive system cancers and laparoscopic surgery; and in 2004 at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, USA) in esophageal, gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic surgery through an international scholarship. He became an Associate Professor in 2005 and a Professor in 2010. Since 2005, his work has been devoted exclusively to the surgical treatment of digestive system cancers—particularly colorectal and gastric cancers—with a focus on laparoscopic and robotic approaches. His landmark study on nerve preservation in laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery (Surg Endosc, 2009) has been cited in major international meta-analyses and incorporated into the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons (EAES) clinical practice guidelines. Prof. Asoğlu served three terms as a Board Member and Secretary General of the Turkish Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He has performed numerous live robotic rectal cancer surgeries at international congresses, is an honorary member of the Russian School of Coloproctology, and has authored over 100 international publications. His work has been cited 4,652 times (h-index: 29, i10-index: 69). He is the world’s first recipient of the “Surgeon of Excellence” certification for a colorectal program from the independent Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), and the fourth worldwide to receive the same recognition in the field of robotic surgery. From 2012 to 2016, he served as the founding Medical Director of Liv Hospital, and in 2016–2017 as the founding Dean of İstinye University Faculty of Medicine. He currently works in his private practice and part-time at Acıbadem Maslak Hospital.
