Dr Sujith Wijerathne graduated from University of Colombo, SriLanka in 2008 and started his medical career at the National University Hospital, Singapore in 2009. He started his training in General Surgery at National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore in 2010 and obtained the qualifications of MRCS (Edinburgh) in 2012 and MMed (Surgery, NUS) in 2016. He completed his advanced specialist training in General Surgery in 2017 and obtained his fellowships for General Surgery from Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Academy of Medicine Singapore. Dr Wijerathne was accredited as a specialist in General Surgery by the specialist accreditation board, Singapore in 2017. Dr Wijerathne holds an appointment as Clinical Lecturer for the Department of Surgery, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS since 2015 and has a keen interest on both undergraduate and post graduate education and training. He was appointed as Adjunct Assistant Professor for the Department of Surgery, NUS in February 2021. He has organised a number of basic laparoscopy, advanced laparoscopy and suturing workshops for surgical residents in Singapore. He’s an active member of the Singapore Medical Association (SMA), Endoscopic & Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA), Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS) and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Under the ELSA out-reach program he has contributed to a number of international basic and advanced laparoscopy workshops in the south and south-east Asian region as an instructor. Dr Wijerathne has authored several publications and book chapters under minimally invasive surgery and hernia surgery. He has also presented his research work frequently at international meetings and has won a several awards for his work at these meetings as well. Dr Wijerathne has been involved in the setting up and development of the general surgery service at Alexandra Integrated General Hospital, Singapore since June 2018. Leading the clinical services planning for surgical services at Alexandra Hospital he's also playing a key role in the integration of the surgical services in the NUHS cluster. He holds the position as the Head, General Surgery Service at Alexandra Hospital since October 2023. His specialty is General Surgery and he has special interests in Minimally Invasive Surgery, Complex Hernia Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy.
