Horacio Asbun United States

Horacio Asbun, M.D., FACS, is Professor and Chief of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Miami Cancer Institute and Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University. Prior to this role, he served as Chairman of General Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fl. (2008-2018) and served as Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science until 2022. Dr. Asbun is former President (2020-2021) of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and Executive Member of the Board of Governors. He also served as a member of the Executive Council of the American Hepato-Pancreatic Biliary Association (AHPBA), Chairman of the Video-Based Education of the American College of Surgeons and is a founding Board Member of The G4 Alliance, the International Laparoscopic Liver Society, and the International Minimally Invasive Pancreas Surgery consortium. Dr. Asbun is the Editor-in-Chief of the American College of Surgeons Multimedia Atlas of Surgery and is on the Editorial Board of Surgical Endoscopy. He has served as a panel member on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines for pancreatic cancer and a member of 25 Medical Societies He has been, and currently is a member, Chair or Co-Chair of multiple Committees on several major US surgical societies. Dr. Asbun is a member of multiple international expert surgical initiatives and expert study groups. Among them, International Study Group of Pancreas Surgery (ISGPS), Tokyo Guidelines (TG 18), European Guidelines on Laparoscopic Liver Surgery (EGMLLS), International Consensus on Laparoscopic Liver Resection (ICLLR), International Consensus on Prevention of Bile Duct Injury, European Guidelines of Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Surgery (EGUMIPS), International consensus on Peri-ampullary Neoplasms (PERIPAN), REDISCOVER Consensus Meeting of Pancreas. He has also served as the Chair of the Evidence-Based, International Guidelines in Minimally Invasive Pancreas Resection (IG-MIPR). Dr. Asbun has published more than 225 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 142 peer-reviewed surgical videos. He is author of over 37 book chapters and editor of 6 Surgical Books. He serves as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals. He directs and teaches national and international courses on surgery and speaks frequently at scientific conferences around the world, with, to-date, more than 950 presentations in the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, Central and South America. He is an Honorary Fellow of several International Surgical Societies and has received multiple awards. At a 2022 American College of Surgeons meeting in Bolivia, he was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa of UDABOL. His publications are in the areas of liver, pancreas, biliary and endocrine surgery, minimal invasive surgery, surgical oncology, as well as basic science research in the field of surgical oncology.
